Board of Trustees Purchase New Play Equipment! After less than a year of fundraising, Camp Mt. Hermon has received enough money from their fundraising project to purchase the first of several items. The Board of Trustees has approved and begun the process of purchasing new play equipment. You can get a sneak peek at the equipment purchased at the following link: http://sutherlands.com/products/product.php?item=9833179. The Board of Trustees will assemble the new play set during the April 30 - May 2, 2010 work weekend and have it ready for the 2010 camping season. It was unanimously approved to be placed near the basketball and volleyball courts where the Board of Trustees believe it will get better use. We plan to have it dedicated at Family Camp this year which will take place August 20-22, 2010. Everyone is, also, welcome to join the trustees during work weekend as we prepare for the upcoming camping season.
Last year the Camp Mt. Hermon trustees had their annual spring meeting, in which several items were brought to our attention concerning the camp and its upkeep. We are fortunate, in our district, to have two church camps for our youth to attend: Camp Colorado and Camp Mt. Hermon.
As we are in the midst of a transformational movement in Western Plains District, we must not forget the important role these camps play in the development of our youth, in whom lies the future of our church and heritage.
Trustees are hoping for both renovations and additions! The biggest and most pressing issue is the bath house, which needs to be completely renovated with updated plumbing, electrical and fixtures. Other projects we are hoping to complete is a covered picnic area, as well as a new and safer playground area. Putting a covered picnic area and new playground equipment around our existing basketball and volleyball courts would be an incentive to renters, as well as a safe and more accessible area for our children and youth to hang out during camp.
We continue to ask individuals, churches, families and youth groups to discern how much they are able to give to help us achieve our goal. The fundraising goal is set at $35,000, almost $3500 of which has already been received. This amount should enable both the bath house renovations and the additions of a picnic shelter and new playground equipment. This is quite a lot of money to ask for, especially during a rough economic time. But, many of you have seen these kids at camp and know the impact it has in their lives. Children and youth are learning about our Lord and His people. They forming ideas together for our church's future, whether it be for the camps, local churches, our district, or our denomination. Our children and youth are big dreamers! And, it is well worth the extra effort to continue making it possible for them to attend a Brethren summer church camp.
Any donation, small or large, will be greatly appreciated! If anyone would like to make a contribution, please send it to the following address: Camp Mt. Hermon Fundraiser, c/o Western Plains District Office, P.O. Box 394, McPherson, Kansas 67460. Be sure to write "Camp Mt. Hermon fundraiser" in the memo line of any checks, as well. Over the past few years, we have all become familiar with the term “miraculous expectation”, so the goal is set and we shall leave the rest up to God. We are confident in expecting miracles to happen and are excited to share with you the first of many more to come! Join us at Family Camp when we dedicate our new play equipment!
Come Along With Me will be June 4-6, 2010!Camp Mt. Hermon is excited to announce that the Come Along With Me Weekend Camp will be offered again during the 2010 camping season and has become a new tradition! This summer, unlike previous summers, the camp will take place at the beginning of June! Mark your calendars now, as this is a weekend not to be missed! Director of the camp, Dalene Ward, said, 'It is a chance for children to spend quality time with an adult in their life.' Come Along With Me Weekend Camp is for children who have finished kindergarten through 2nd grade and an adult over 21 who would like to accompany them. It is a time that the child and adult can worship, learn, play and work together. Work Camp Dates AnnouncedThe Board of Trustees have scheduled two Work Weekends to prepare for the upcoming camping season. The first will be Saturday, March 20, 2010. This work day is taking place so early in the spring to avoid any critters which will be coming coming out of hibernation as the goal of the day is to clean the brush from around the sewage pond. April 30 - May 2 has been decided upon as the major work weekend of the year. This weekend will be crucial to gather as much help as possible, as there are many projects necessary to prepare for campers, in addition to putting together the newly purchased play equipment. Some of the projects include picking up branches, washing dishes, cleaning out cabins, mowing, and possibly cutting new paths in the trees. Join us for a weekend of giving back to the camp we love so much!
2010 Summer Camp Theme Announced! As always, the Church of the Brethren camps that take place during the month of June have the option to use the Church of the Brethren Outdoor Ministries curriculum recommended by Brethren Press. This year's theme is: "Be A Hero: Living Like Jesus". Brethren Press describes the theme in this way: "To 'Be a Hero' for God means recognizing a need, realizing that something can be done to address that need, and taking the risk to act. Each day campers will hear a story of a biblical hero who followed God in a brave and amazing way. God's heroes act in ways big and small as they welcome, befriend, and include others, as they give, rejoice, and share the good news. Campers will learn that they can live like Jesus in simple ways, with everyday things as ordinary people. Campers will leave camp ready to use their courage and faith to 'Be a Hero' for God." The theme seems to fit perfectly in the way our denomination acts out their faith! Peacefully, simply, together!
